A Community Rising to Protect the Reticulated Somali Giraffe
About the Sanctuary
Nestled in the drylands of Wajir County, Northern Kenya, Wajir Giraffe Sanctuary is a grassroots, community-based wildlife sanctuary dedicated to the protection of the endangered reticulated Somali giraffe—a species found only in this region.
Founded in 2020 by local elders, youth, and women, the sanctuary emerged from a shared mission: to stop the decline of giraffe populations caused by poaching, habitat loss, and climate change. Today, it stands as the first and only sanctuary of its kind in the area. Our work goes beyond wildlife protection. We restore habitats, train community rangers, run school outreach programs, and develop eco-tourism in Northern Kenya—all led by the people who call this land home.
From mapping giraffe corridors to celebrating World Giraffe Day with local schools, we’re building a movement where people and wildlife thrive together. At Wajir Giraffe Sanctuary, conservation isn’t just about saving giraffes. It’s about safeguarding culture, restoring ecosystems, and creating a better future for generations to come.
Conservation in Action
Protecting Giraffes. Restoring Land. Empowering People.
Saving Endangered Giraffes
We monitor and protect the reticulated Somali giraffe—one of Africa’s most threatened subspecies—through ranger patrols, research, and habitat mapping.
Restoring Fragile Ecosystems
Thousands of native trees have been planted and key wildlife corridors restored, giving giraffes the safe and connected spaces they need to survive.
Empowering Communities
Our programs support women and youth with conservation training, eco-tourism skills, and alternative livelihoods that reduce pressure on wildlife.
